MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following their performances at the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, freshman Ty Watters and senior Peyton Hall of the West Virginia University wrestling team have been WVU Student-Athletes of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
 
The two combined for a 10-4 record at the NCAA Championships, which resulted in the pair becoming the 36th and 37th All-Americans in program history. Watters became the third true freshman to earn the honor, while Hall became the ninth multi-time honoree.
 
This performance by the duo marked the fifth time West Virginia had two All-Americans in the same year and the first time since 2005, which led the Mountaineers to its highest finish since 2004 (17th) and most team points since 2005 (31.5).
 
West Virginia concluded the season with the NCAA Championships.
 
This Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers will face No. 1-seeded Iowa in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, on Monday, March 25, at 8 p.m. ET ... the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
 
Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia defeated No. 9-seeded Princeton, 63-53, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Iowa City on March 23 ... junior guard JJ Quinerly led all scorers with 29 points ... Quinerly's 29 points ties for the most points scored by a Mountaineer in a tournament game ... she also tied the most field goals made by a Mountaineer in a tournament game with 10.
 
Notes: With the win against Princeton, WVU advanced to the second round of the tournament for the first time since 2021 ... head coach Mark Kellogg became the first WVU coach to win a tournament game in their first season.
 
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia returns home for four games this week … the week gets started on Tuesday, March 26, when Akron comes to Kendrick Family Ballpark with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. ET … Oklahoma State makes the trip to Morgantown for a weekend series beginning on Friday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. followed by Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. … all the games this week will be available to stream on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
 
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers went 3-1 this past week with a midweek win over Marshall before claiming a series on the road at No. 17 Oklahoma … WVU shut out the Herd on March 20, 15-0, getting five home runs – two from senior Reed Chumley and one each from freshman Aaron Jamison, sophomore Sam White and junior Kyle West … six Mountaineer pitchers combined for the third shutout of the season … against Oklahoma, the series got off to a rough start as two Sooner pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter in a 13-0 victory … the Mountaineers rebounded on March 23 as they swept a doubleheader, winning game one, 9-5, before taking the second game, 8-3 … senior Derek Clark hurled a complete game with seven strikeouts in game one … redshirt-sophomore David Hagaman struck out a career-high 10 batters in relief in game two to earn the win … Jamison, freshman Spencer Barnett, freshman Michael Perazza, sophomore Benjamin Lumsden and junior Grant Hussey all hit home runs in the second game.
 
Notes: In its last trip to Norman for the foreseeable future, West Virginia won the series for the first time since 2014, their first trip to L. Dale Mitchell Park … the Mountaineers have now won eight straight games against Marshall … the two games with five home runs by the Mountaineers were the first with a quintet of dingers since doing so at Kansas in 2022 … senior Reed Chumley hit three home runs this week and now leads the team with five on the season … Clark's complete game was the first for a Mountaineer this season and first since Blaine Traxel threw a complete game against Baylor last season, his fifth of the year … the Mountaineers were no-hit for the first time since 1982 when Marietta tossed a seven-inning no-no … it was the first time since 1926 against Georgetown that WVU was held hitless in a nine-inning game.
 
This Week in Wrestling: West Virginia completed its season at the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championship.
 
Last Week in Wrestling: WVU sent five wrestlers, including junior Jett Strickenberger (125), redshirt sophomore Jordan Titus (141), true freshman Ty Watters (149), senior Peyton Hall (165) and redshirt freshman Brody Conley (174), to compete at the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, Missouri … Hall made his team-leading fourth appearance and Titus made his second appearance at the national tournament, while Strickenberger, Watters and Conley made their debuts … Hall (165) and Watters (149) led the way by both earning All-America honors over the weekend.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers reached their highest finish since 2004 (17th) and most team points since 2005 (31.5) after Hall and Watters combined for a 10-4 record on their way to becoming the 36th and 37th All-Americans in WVU wrestling history … this performance by the duo marked the first time West Virginia captured two NCAA All-Americans in the same year since the Mountaineer pair of Matt Lebe (157) and Greg Jones (184) in 2005 … it is also the eighth national tournament where WVU had multiple wrestlers land on the podium - 1955, 1991, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, and 2005 … Watters joined elite company in former Mountaineer standouts Brandon Rader (2006) and Zeke Moisey (2015) as the third-ever true freshman in program history to claim All-America status, as well as the first WVU grappler to take home the honor at 149 pounds … additionally, the true freshman became the first grappler in school history to win a Big 12 championship and earn a top-8 finish on the mat at nationals, as well as the 13th Mountaineer overall to win a conference title and reach All-American status in the same season … Hall joined Mark Banks, Whitey Chlebove, Mike Mason, Greg Jones, Vertus Jones, Rader, Moisey and Killian Cardinale as the ninth WVU grappler to earn the honor multiple times and first since Cardinale did it in 2021 and 2023 … of note, West Virginia has produced at least one All-American in each of the last five years (Noah Adams – 2020, Cardinale – 2021, Hall – 2022, Cardinale – 2023, Hall and Watters – 2024) under coach Tim Flynn to match a similar stretch of success that the program last achieved from 2003 to 2007, which was a part of a six-year period that began in 2002, during legendary coach Craig Turnbull's tenure.
 
This Week in Golf: Junior Max Green leads the field after shooting 5-under-par in the first round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, South Carolina, on March 24 … a native of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Green recorded seven birdies for the low round of 67 at Bulls Bay Golf Club … he has a two-stroke lead over Connor Gaunt of LSU and Max Dupree of College of Charleston … after 18 holes, the Mountaineers shot even par and are in fifth place out of 15 teams ... LSU leads the tournament at 4-under-par … senior Jackson Davenport is tied for 22nd place at +1, while fifth-year senior Trent Tipton and senior Will Stakel are tied for 31st place at +2 … junior Todd Duncan shot 80 in the first round … the second round is being held Monday, March 25, and the final round on Tuesday, March 26.
 
Last Week in Golf: Senior Jackson Davenport earned a runner-up finish at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tennessee, on March 19 … Davenport posted rounds of 71-72-72=215 (+2) to finish one shot off the tournament title … fellow senior Oli Ménard posted a Top 10 finish with rounds of 70-72-77=219 (+6) to finish tied for eighth place … sophomore Westy McCabe finished tied for 17th place with rounds of 75-75-73=223 (+10), and sophomore Carson Kammann tied for 23rd place with rounds of 86-69-70=225 (+12) … all four golfers competed as individuals … Davenport's runner-up finish marked the second time this week that a Mountaineer finished second in an event … junior Max Green finished second at the Schenkel Invitational on March 17.
 
This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia completed the 2023-24 season with the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
 
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: Sophomores Mia Cheatwood and Abigail Sullivan competed at the NCAA championships at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Georgia ... Cheatwood competed in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke events ... Cheatwood set a program record in the 100 breaststroke (59.73) and placed 28th ... she placed 30th with a final time of 2:09.71in the 200 breaststroke event ... Sullivan competed in the platform event with a total score of 181.70.
 
Notes: Sullivan became the first female WVU diver to qualify for the NCAA championships since 1984 ... she also became the first WVU female diver to qualify in the platform event ... Cheatwood now has the top four times in program history in the 100 breaststroke event and the top three times in program history in the 200 breaststroke.
 
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia will the hit the road to face No. 1 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Thursday, March 28, at 7 p.m. ET and Kansas State on Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m., in Manhattan, Kansas.
 
Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia earned its second Big 12 win of the season with a 6-1 defeat against Houston on March 22 ... the Mountaineers lost to No. 62 UCF, 5-2, on March 23.
 
Notes: West Virginia's 11-1 record through 12 matches was its best record to start the season since 1986 when the team began 12-0 ... for the first time in program history, WVU has won multiple Big 12 matches in a single season ... with the win against Houston, the Mountaineers will also have a winning record for the first time since 2010.
 
This week in Track & Field: West Virginia will travel to the Raleigh Relays on March 28-30 which will be held at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility in Raleigh, North Carolina … Thursday's meet marks the third outdoor matchup for the Mountaineer this season.
 
Last week in Track & Field: The Mountaineers hosted the Stan Romanoski Open on March 22-23 at the Track and Field complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown … the mid-distance team led the way for West Virginia as freshman Mary Delaney claimed first in the 800 meter with a time of 2:15.29 ... redshirt sophomore Emily Bryce and freshman Eva Rinker claimed second and third place in the event with times of 2:16.78 and 2:17.67, respectively … freshman Lily Haught also claimed victory in the women's 400 meter with a time of 59.64 … in the 5,000 meters, redshirt sophomore Aubrie Custer boasted a personal best time of 18:39.74 claiming sixth place.
 
Notes: Delaney and Haught's weekend victories marked the first wins in an event for the pair of freshmen… Haught ranks 16th in the Big 12 in the 400 meter … redshirt senior Mikenna Vanderheyden and freshman Kishay Rowe rank fourth and fifth in the 800 meter conference standings with times of 2:06.72 and 2:07.62, respectively.
 
This Week in Gymnastics: West Virginia wrapped up the 2024 season at the 2024 Big 12 Championships.
 
Last Week in Gymnastics: West Virginia posted a 195.125 final team score to finish in fifth place at the 2024 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship inside the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma ... senior Kiana Lewis' performance on vault highlighted the meet, as she scored a career-high matching 9.9 to finish in third place in the final event standings ... WVU used scores of 49.125 on vault, 47.975 on the uneven bars, 48.875 on balance beam and 49.15 on floor exercise to reach the final score.
 
Notes: WVU concluded the 2024 campaign, finishing the campaign 8-15 on the year ... the Mountaineers celebrated their 50-year anniversary this season, with their varsity status dating back to 1974. Saturday's competition also marked the final collegiate meet for seniors Ellen Collins, Lewis and Abbie Pierson ... Lewis' finish earned her a place on the All-Big 12 Championship Team on vault, the first to place on vault since Kirah Koshinski in 2017 ... the Mountaineers' total on vault marked its highest of the season, as well as their second 49.0+ score of the season ... the squad's floor score also marked its seventh straight 49.0+ score on the event.
 
This Week in Rowing: West Virginia will compete in the Sunshine State Invitational at the Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, from March 29-30 ... this is the first event of the season for the Mountaineers.
