Mountaineers Set Multiple Records on Night One of Big 12 Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the first night of the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown on Tuesday.
 
The first day was highlighted by multiple swimmers setting team records. Sophomore Mia Cheatwood set a program record in the 200-yard breaststroke during the time trials on Tuesday morning. Cheatwood finished with a final time of 2:09.80 to break a record set in 2019 (2:09.93).
 
The relay team comprised of seniors Danny Berlitz and Roanoke Shirk, sophomore Max Nielsen and redshirt freshman Christian Simpson broke a 2014 program record in the men's 800-yard freestyle event with a final time of 6:26.02.
 
The team also collected West Virginia's first medal of the championship, placing third behind Texas and TCU in first and second, respectively.
 
In the first leg of the 800-yard freestyle, Berlitz set a school record with a 1:35.55 in his 200-yard split. He broke Shirk's record set in 2023 at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships (1:35.71).
 
In the diving well, the men's diving team placed fourth during the team diving competition with a final score of 323.20.
 
West Virginia will continue Big 12 competition on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The preliminary round begins at 10 a.m., while the finals begin at 6 p.m.
