West Virginia Wraps Up WVU Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished the WVU Invitational on Saturday at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
 
The women's swimming and diving team (0-2, 0-1 Big 12) finished in first place with 1,206 points. The men's swimming and diving team (1-1, 1-0 Big 12) placed second with 1,640 points behind Navy (2,358).

"Very proud of the teams this weekend," head coach Vic Riggs said. "They raced and dove very well against some very good teams. We've discussed improving every meet and if we can continue to do that the rest of the season, we'll finish strong." 
 
The first win of the evening came in the men's 100-yard freestyle event. Junior Conner McBeth took first for the Mountaineers as his final time was 43.64. Senior Danny Berlitz continued his dominance at the invitational, winning the 200-yard breaststroke (1:57.16).
 
The relay team comprised of Berlitz, McBeth, senior Roanoke Shirk and sophomore Max Nielsen placed first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:56.66) event to wrap up the night for the men's team.
 
Freshman Trevor Hudson also earned points for WVU, placing third in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:41.01) event.
 
Sophomore Mia Cheatwood had the first individual victory for the women's team on Saturday, winning the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.60) event.
 
The relay team comprised of Cheatwood, sophomores Ada Szwabinska and Gabriela Martin and senior Kate Beckish earned points for WVU, finishing in third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:23.99).
 
In the diving well, junior Glenn Eloriaga won the men's platform event, finishing with 332.25 points. Eloriaga also placed second on the 1-meter springboard with 343.70 points. Navy's Blake Shaw placed first with 350.65 points.
 
Freshman Owen Recker placed second on the 3-meter springboard (321.20) behind Navy's Finnian Gelbach (341.55).
 
In the women's platform event, senior Sara Haggerty (197.10) and junior Sarah Krusinski (189.35) finished seventh and ninth place, respectively.
