Strong Performance From WVU on Day One Against Cincinnati

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams had strong performances on the first night of a dual-meet against Cincinnati on Friday at the Keating Aquatic Center in Cincinnati.
 
The men's team (0-1) won six events in the pool, including the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard freestyle, 50-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard freestyle relay. After the first night, the Mountaineers trail Cincinnati, 98-88.
 
The women's team (0-1) won two events in the pool, including the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. West Virginia trails Cincinnati, 125-61.
 
Freshman Madeline Smutny won the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.76) ahead of Cincinnati's Libby Michel (4:56.87). Junior Mia Walters set a pool record for the Keating Aquatics Center in the 100-yard butterfly with a final time of 47.86 for West Virginia's second win.
 
In the diving well, junior Sarah Krusinski qualified for the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships on the women's 3-meter springboard with a 294.38. Sophomore Abigail Sullivan placed third behind Cincinnati's Langley Peterson (258.53) with a final score of 242.03.
 
For the men's team, senior Danny Berlitz led the way with two individual victories, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (55.43) and the 400-yard individual medley (3:54.67).
 
Senior Justin Heimes earned the victory in the 100-yard backstroke (49.66), senior Roanoke Shirk won the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.37) and junior Conner McBeth won the 50-yard freestyle (20.41).
 
The relay team comprised of McBeth, Shirk, junior Braden Osborn and sophomore Max Nielsen won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:21.54) event.
 
In the diving well, junior Glenn Eloriaga finished in second place behind Cincinnati's Will Claus (328.18) on the men's 1-meter springboard with a final score of 295.88.
 
The Mountaineers return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 28. Diving will begin at 10 a.m. and swimming will begin at 11 a.m.
